Welcome to The Utsuro Hotel
Our historic lobby, photographed shortly before renovation.
Thank you for considering The Utsuro Hotel for your stay. A first-person horror roguelite set in a Showa-era Japanese business hotel that will not explain itself. Our stairwell holds twelve doors and twelve floors, and no door announces which floor it opens onto. You find that out once you are standing in it and the lock has turned behind you.
Every floor keeps its own key, stamped with its own number. Recover it and the stairwell will take you back. Or call the elevator, which is faster, breaks down every time, and does not let you choose where it stops. Whichever floor you find yourself on, a member of our staff is always nearby.
Guests are kindly asked not to use the stairwell after check-in. We look forward to welcoming you. We have been expecting you for some time.
Accommodations
Twelve doors. Twelve floors.
The Utsuro Hotel offers twelve floors of quiet, well-appointed rooms — the basement, ten guest floors, and a lovely roof — served by a single stairwell. At the start of your stay none of its doors are assigned. The first time you open one, it is bound to a floor, and it keeps that floor for the remainder of your visit.
Corridors stay where you left them. Nothing in this building rearranges behind your back, so everything you learn about a floor remains true for as long as you are checked in. Where the long hallway bends. Which floor buries its key at the dead end. We consider this a courtesy.
Your goal is simple: reach Floor 11. The building will let you leave. Once.
Hotel Amenities
Every comfort the building is willing to provide.
The building decides where you go
Twelve doors, and no relationship between them and the floors until you open one. Every choice is made blind and paid for on arrival.
A locked horizon
Guests may look left and right. You cannot look up and you cannot look down. Whatever is above you stays a rumor.
The floors hold still
Each visit builds a new hotel, but nothing moves while you are inside it. Your mapping is real. So are your mistakes.
A key for every floor
Each key is stamped with the floor it belongs to and opens nothing else. Finding the right one in time is its own kind of trouble.
An elevator, of a kind
It tells the truth about the building's vertical order, climbs three or four floors, and breaks down every time. Repair it on arrival, or take the stairs.
No upgrades, no upkeep
There is nothing to level and nothing to equip. Guests improve by knowing more than they did the last time.
A building that speaks in objects
No announcements, no narrator. Signage, maintenance clipboards, and notes left by guests who arrived before you. Some of it is out of date. Some of it is a lie.
You are not always alone
The Bellhop charges anything directly in front of it and will not steer. The Concierge is slow until you look at it. Both follow strict rules. Neither is posted.
You cannot fight anything in this hotel. You can only be somewhere else.

Frequently Asked
What time is checkout?
There is no checkout. Guests may leave by the roof. Once.
Is the elevator safe?
The elevator is honest. It only travels upward, it will not say where it intends to stop, and it breaks down on every ride. Repairs are the guest's responsibility.
Which floor am I on?
Consult the plaque by the stairwell door. The building knows. It simply hasn't decided which floor that is.
May I look up?
No. The ceiling is not part of the tour.
Is there a basement?
Floor 0. It follows different rules. We would rather not list them here.
Are headphones necessary?
Strongly recommended. Sound is the only map we provide free of charge.
